Day Five – Mid-Afternoon

The station is nearly empty. I’m not an expert on the normal state of such places in big cities, but there should be more than a couple of people in the main room.

“When can I talk to an officer?” Amanda asks.

“Probably in about an hour, maybe two,” the receptionist replies. “I wasn’t given details, just that half of them are on some sort of team-building exercise, and most of the other half are covering the beat shifts for the other precincts.”

“So, going to another precinct won’t help at all?” I ask.

“That is my understanding, yes. Normally, you’d be welcome to sit in the waiting area, but no one’s around to keep an eye on it, and could get dangerously crowded around here if everyone who came in could sit inside. I’m going to have to ask you to wait outside.”

Amanda does not want to wait outside. “Empty is nowhere near dangerously crowded,” she says. “So, here’s an idea. How about you let us sit and rest a few minutes until it starts approaching crowdedness, and then we can go outside, so the next group can sit?”

“I have clear orders. You need to leave.”

“I’ve had a really long day and need to rest.”

“And you can,” says the receptionist. “But not here.”

“Let’s go,” I say. “I bet she doesn’t even know where Richard Moon is right now.”

“Don’t insult me, everyone in the city should know where he is. You must be new here. If you’re honeymooning or anything like that, there must be hundreds of better things to do in the city than going to visit that alien down in the Federal Reserve building on Wall Street. And this should be done with a police escort, if done at all, and of course you won’t be getting one any time soon because of the team-building. There’s just me and a couple of officers who are on guard duty here, and they don’t have time to talk to you, let alone take you anywhere. But they do have time to make you leave.”

“I told you that would get us kicked out,” Amanda whispers.

It didn’t, though. Not exactly. I mean, it sort of did, but we’d already been asked to leave. This just increased the urgency of the matter.

I ask the officer a question. “Do you know what it is about Richard Moon that made her think I should be scared of him?”

He waits until we’re outside before answering. “The department is just trying to protect its own tail in case something goes wrong. The fewer people who go down there, the less chance of a problem. But Richard’s a good kid. Works security in the gold vaults. You’ll be fine as long as you don’t steal anything, or make him angry, or pour a bunch of water on him.”

“And what happens if I do either of those last two things?”

“Just don’t do it. It should not be hard, especially the water part. Have a nice day.”
